This 2019 post from Sebastian Saboune, then a product coach at Founders Factory, starts with the statement “I believe the future of product management is product thinking. And product coaching is how we get there”.

Understanding of product management has come a long way, Sebastian says, but it’s time to evolve product management into product thinking. Product management will become product thinking, product managers will become product coaches, and this will lead to organisations being more product led.

There’s an opportunity for product management to learn from the Agile, design and UX communities which have already made this transition, Sebastian says.  He’s  put together a set of core product thinking principles, which he summarises as “build the right thing, the right way”.

He’s also created a coaching framework that he used to work with for every startup at the Factory. The framework consists of three main parts, uncertainty, empathy, and resilience. He uses a theory called the Zone of Proximal Development to deal with uncertainty and Empathy Mapping and Product Radical Listening to address empathy. Building resilience and  getting teams and businesses to become more product led is a repetitive and lengthy process, he says.
