This week’s Sunday Rewind from Lilia Gorbachik looks at the many types of product manager and why it’s important to understand how all these roles can differ when you’re talking to other PMs or looking for a job.
It can knock your confidence if you don’t understand the difference, she says: “It appears that you do one thing and the speaker does something else. Then you hear another talk and see another world. It’s so confusing, it’s not clear what a product manager does.”
There is no one ideal product manager, she says. But you can find what works best for you. There are a lot of product manager types, each requiring different competencies: “That’s why the first step is to review the possible product manager’s types and understand what is suitable for you and brings you joy.”
Lilia then runs through some different product management roles, looking at the requirements for each of them. She reviews eight different types of product management role, including technical product manager, UX product manager, AI product manager, startup product manager and growth product manager.
